XPeng G9L: He Xiaopeng's "Ultimate Redemption" for the G9
On September 21, 2022, when XPeng G9 was officially launched with a price range of 309,900 yuan to 469,900 yuan, no one could have predicted that this 9-series SUV, which takes the world's first mass-produced 800V platform and full-scenario assisted driving as its selling points, would become the starting point for XPeng to enter a low ebb.
Since then, the G9 model has seemed like an untouchable wound for XPeng.
Nearly four years later, XPeng as an enterprise has gone through a series of efforts and long stepped out of the operational trough brought by G9 — but as for the G9 product, although it has undergone three facelift updates in 2023, 2025 and 2026, it has not broken out of the rut of the old G9, nor has it achieved sales that meet expectations.
Against this backdrop, four years after the release of XPeng G9, XPeng G9L is here.
In the changes of XPeng's product system, XPeng G9L plays multiple roles. On the one hand, it is a large five-seat flagship SUV standing side by side with XPeng GX; on the other hand, it is another 9-series SUV released in XPeng's SUV product line after a four-year interval. To a certain extent, it inherits the product positioning of G9, but is completely separated from G9 in product logic.
More importantly, through G9L, XPeng is also continuing to fulfill a more distinctive mission.
Homologous with GX but differentiated from GX
What is the product connection between XPeng G9L and XPeng G9?
The answer is: there is almost no connection except for the name.
Indeed, G9L sounds like a version of G9 that is enlarged in size — from the perspective of dimensions, the length, width and height of G9 are 4891 × 1937 × 1670 mm respectively; while the length, width and height of G9L are 5120 × 1999 × 1782 mm respectively, which is indeed larger than G9 in overall size.
However, from the perspective of product construction, it is a product that has no associated attributes with G9. According to He Xiaopeng's statement at the press conference on September 17, the development of XPeng G9L started three years ago, which was in mid-2023, after Wang Fengying joined XPeng as President and took charge of product business.
In fact, G9L is closely related to GX instead.
In the interview after the XPeng G9L launch event, Wu Anfei, General Manager of Product Matrix of XPeng Group, clearly stated that XPeng G9L was developed on the same origin as XPeng GX from the very beginning. Both are positioned as flagship models, and G9L is positioned as a large five-seat SUV with 9-series product capabilities.
From the product point of view, G9L is aligned with GX in many key configurations, such as ENC+RNC active noise reduction, steer-by-wire rear wheel steering, 800V high-voltage platform, and intelligent driving. In terms of safety, whether it is passive safety, active safety or redundant safety, XPeng G9L is also aligned with XPeng GX.
XPeng clearly stated that G9L is built in accordance with the 9-series flagship SUV standards, and brings many of the same flagship configurations as GX to G9L. At the press conference site, XPeng also placed the GX and G9L at the main entrance of the venue, aiming to strengthen the product positioning combination of the two models as "dual flagships".
However, although they are from the same origin, G9L and GX have obvious differentiation in products.
For example, the length of GX exceeds 5.2 meters, while G9L is 5.1 meters, which is slightly smaller in overall size than GX; at the same time, as a full-size flagship, GX not only has the same steer-by-wire rear wheel steering as G9L, but also is equipped with a steer-by-wire chassis that further reflects technological leadership.
Due to the different body sizes and number of seats, there are also obvious differences in space between G9L and GX — it is worth mentioning that in the G9L model, XPeng is also equipped with a full-body AI adaptive seat technology, which can "adapt to nearly 98% of user body types worldwide" and is designed to enhance the comfort of the front passenger seat.
However, compared with GX, the biggest feature of G9L in product design is its insistence on handling performance. To this end, XPeng G9L adopts a golden axle-to-length ratio of 0.605. With the support of configurations such as dual-chamber air suspension, rear wheel steering, and X-VMC chassis motion control system, it can achieve a turning radius of 5.4 meters and an elk test score of over 80 km/h.
At the press conference, XPeng specially invited the well-known actor Yin Zheng as the G9L performance inspector. He spent nearly half an hour talking about the driving experience of G9L, and also displayed the XPeng G9L high-speed mobile photography modified version on site — through this impressive move, XPeng G9L fully demonstrated the product features of the vehicle including acceleration, braking, handling stability, body strength and space loading capacity.
Overall, as an SUV positioned as a "golden large five-seat technology flagship", XPeng G9L completely breaks away from the original product framework of G9 at the product level, and forms a unique product position of XPeng's new generation 9-series SUV through in-depth product integration and binding with GX.
To a certain extent, compared with G9, G9L represents a generational evolution in XPeng's development of 9-series SUV products — and this evolution is a qualitative change.
G9L's market ambition: retain existing users and attract new users
Compared with its self-innovation significance in product construction, what makes the outside world pay close attention to G9L is its aggressive pricing strategy and the market ambition demonstrated by it.
The pricing of G9L is quite aggressive — it breaks the rules of other competitors, and also breaks the inherent rules of XPeng's own product line.
According to the entry price announced by the official on September 18, the price of XPeng G9L is divided into 6 tiers in total. The four tiers of the pure electric version are 231,800 yuan, 249,800 yuan, 279,800 yuan and 309,800 yuan respectively; the two tiers of the super range-extended version are 249,800 yuan and 299,800 yuan respectively.
Overall, XPeng G9L, with multiple versions of a single model, fully covers the overall price range from 230,000 yuan to 310,000 yuan, and the pure electric version covers a wider range. In other words, XPeng G9L's market goal is to carve out a niche in the extremely fierce and cruel market competition in the 200,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan price range.
For this goal, G9L does not hesitate to break the inherent product pricing logic of XPeng itself.
After all, from XPeng's own product lineup, there are already three five-seat models in the G series: G6, G7 and G9. After completing the latest product layout, the entry threshold of G6 ranges from 176,800 yuan to 186,800 yuan; the price of G7 ranges from 195,800 yuan to 205,800 yuan, both of which have pure electric and super range-extended versions — but they almost completely avoid the 200,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan price range.
In comparison, within the 200,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan price range, after the 2026 XPeng G9 underwent annual facelift and renewal in January 2026, it still only has a pure electric version, and its price range covers 248,800 yuan to 278,800 yuan.
However, judging from the market performance in the first eight months of 2026, even after a series of product updates and price cuts, the market performance of the 2026 XPeng G9 can still be described as mediocre — according to relevant data disclosure, in the first eight months of 2026, the monthly sales volume of XPeng G9 has remained at hundreds of units, which is the model with the lowest sales volume among all XPeng's products on sale.
It can be said that XPeng G9, which was originally supposed to act as the main sales contributor in the 200,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan market segment, has been unable to continue its mission.
In this case, the release of XPeng G9L can be said to be a very timely complement.
On the one hand, the size and positioning of G9L are clearly differentiated from G6, G7 and G9, and its upper price limit is also significantly raised, forming a small-scale price interleaved zone with GX, thus enhancing users' product perception in the 200,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan price range; on the other hand, G9L deploys both pure electric and super range-extended versions in the product line, providing users with more choices.
More importantly, in order to fulfill the mission of driving sales, XPeng G9L is also continuously lowering its lower price limit — one detail that is easily overlooked is that the entry threshold of G9L is even lower than that of the 2026 XPeng G9.
This means that for XPeng, G9L not only needs to take over the user group that XPeng G9 originally targeted to form sufficient and important product defense, but also needs to retain XPeng's old user group through the old user rights with a maximum value of 82,000 yuan, and on this basis, capture more potential customers with a budget of 200,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan who are considering non-pure electric vehicles.
For G9L, this is a very arduous challenge that must be faced.
This is also why, although XPeng G9L is a large five-seat flagship SUV with a length of more than 5.1 meters and many obvious configurations are standard, XPeng still greatly lowers its entry price threshold and shows an unusually obvious aggressiveness — its core purpose, as Wang Fengying said in the video, is to achieve "no rivals in the world at this price point".
Continue to move upmarket while going global
For XPeng, setting the price of G9L is a particularly difficult task.
In fact, as He Xiaopeng said in the interview session after the meeting, because of the pricing of G9L, he and Wang Fengyang often argued in the meeting room and eased their emotions when eating, "There is a lot of pain in this process".
After all, in addition to achieving strong sales in the 200,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan price range crowded with strong competitors, G9L also has another mission, which is to drive the brand to move upmarket — and in this price range, high sales volume and high price (and the resulting gross profit margin space) are mutually exclusive to a certain extent.
For XPeng at this stage, driving the brand to move upmarket is an inevitable task.
The reason is that in the process of getting out of the trough in the past few years, although XPeng's product line has covered the price range from 150,000 yuan to 400,000 yuan, the models that really drive sales have always been priced below 200,000 yuan, and the performance of high-priced models is not outstanding.
In 2025, the sales volume of XPeng MONA M03, which is priced from 119,800 yuan, accounted for more than 40% of XPeng's total annual sales, and the average selling price of XPeng's single car in 2025 also dropped to 159,000 yuan — in the first 8 months of 2026, MONA M03 still accounts for 41.78% of XPeng's total sales.
Under such a sales structure, XPeng's automotive gross profit margin is facing huge pressure. In 2025, XPeng's annual automotive gross profit margin was 12.8%; and in 2026, XPeng's automotive gross profit margin in the first two quarters was 12.1% and 12.1% respectively, which brought greater profit challenges to XPeng.
Based on this background, XPeng is also trying to get rid of this dilemma in 2026 and has taken steps to "move the brand upmarket".
In the second quarter of this year, XPeng GX was officially released. This model, which "integrates all the cutting-edge technologies of XPeng Group", fired the first shot of XPeng's upmarket strategy with a price range of 269,800 yuan to 349,800 yuan.
At that time, in the interview, He Xiaopeng clearly stated that "XPeng moves upmarket, GX takes the lead" is the company's declaration. Wu Anfei, General Manager of Platform Product Matrix of XPeng Group, also said in the interview that GX's pricing strategy is different from XPeng's past practices, "We hope to show the best flagship products first" and "determine the price of good products".
The release of G9L is obviously a further inheritance of XPeng's upmarket strategy.
In the interview at this press conference, Wu Anfei clearly stated that G9L has a clear positioning, that is, to become (together with GX) the dual flagships, hoping to continue to drive the brand to move upmarket, and pursue both sales volume and profit. From this perspective, it is obvious that in the process of XPeng's brand upgrading, XPeng G9L is playing the role of the "second shot" after GX.
However, G9L's ambition goes beyond that.
Compared with GX, XPeng G9L has a more important mission, which is to go global. In fact, XPeng's globalization pace has been continuing, and MONA L03, as XPeng's global model, has already entered the international market — now, XPeng G9L will continue to enter the global market as XPeng's new global model.
At the press conference, He Xiaopeng clearly emphasized that XPeng G9L is designed to meet the world's top five-star safety standards, and has completed a total of 6.74 million kilometers of road tests in 26 countries and regions around the world over three years. Moreover, as a global model, XPeng G9L will hold a global launch event in France on October 12, and will also start simultaneous production in Central Europe.
This is undoubtedly a new milestone for XPeng's internationalization process.
In any case, marked by the release of G9L, XPeng has taken a further step forward in the process of product system reconstruction, brand upgrading and globalization. This step is full of challenges, but it is also an explanation that XPeng must give to itself and its users — as for whether this
