Why Have Peking University and Tsinghua University Been Locked in a Fierce Math Rivalry?

During the 1952 national faculty reorganization, the entire Department of Mathematics of Tsinghua University was incorporated into Peking University. All the faculty, books and materials were moved to the Yan Yuan campus, leaving Tsinghua's mathematics program completely disrupted for nearly 30 years, until the Department of Applied Mathematics was re-established in 1979.

The rivalry between the two universities has expanded from poaching middle school students to competing for faculty, research funding, and academic resources. Even in the currently booming AI mathematics field, the two sides have pushed the competition to new heights.

First, let's talk about competing for students. Tsinghua's Leading Talent Program lowered the admission threshold to the 9th grade, and Peking University immediately followed suit by launching its own mathematics elite program, also starting to recruit prodigies before the 11th grade. Tsinghua took the lead, collaborating with Tencent Hunyuan's team to develop the STARE algorithm, specifically solving the long-standing problem where "one wrong step in the middle of a math problem leads to all subsequent calculations being wasted" for large models.
