In 2020, Tesla publicly introduced the 4680 large cylindrical battery. This product, which employs all-pole tab and dry electrode technologies, was once regarded as the future of power batteries.

However, as the demand for charging efficiency in new energy vehicles becomes increasingly urgent, square aluminum-shell or pouch battery products with 4C, 6C, or even 12C capabilities have been successively launched into the market. In contrast, the progress of large cylindrical batteries represented by the 4680 has been very slow.

Compared with square aluminum-shell or pouch batteries, which have a natural heat dissipation advantage, the 4680 is restricted by the physical characteristics of the cylindrical structure, and its fast-charging ability is its weak point.

To achieve a higher rate of fast-charging ability, thermal management is the key. As the fast-charging limit of square-shell cells continues to be broken, cylindrical batteries have been unable to keep up. Coupled with the lower-than-expected production yield and capacity ramp-up, the public opinion of "abandoning large cylindrical batteries" in the market is fermenting.

Recently, TAILAN NEW ENERGY globally launched the "Cold Core Battery", bringing a new breakthrough to large cylindrical battery technology with a synergistic innovation system of "structure + material + process".

In terms of structure, TAILAN has originally developed a brand-new "axial through" structure, which completely solves the thermal management problem of large cylindrical cells and provides a new solution for the upgrade of fast-charging ability.

Through two designs, semi-through holes and full-through holes, on the basis of the conventional bottom liquid cooling, TAILAN NEW ENERGY has opened up a heat dissipation channel leading directly to the center of the cell. The design of the semi-through hole with a single-sided pole increases the heat exchange area by 17%-20%. The full-through hole with double-sided pole scheme constructs a "highway" for heat dissipation, solving the problem of heat accumulation in the middle of the cell.

Moreover, the dual-area penetrating heat dissipation of the "Cold Core Battery" in the axial and bottom directions installs an "intelligent air conditioning system" inside the cell, solving the heat dissipation problem of large cylindrical batteries.

On the material side, the cathode material of the Cold Core Battery is regulated through coating modification to improve the ion transmission speed, establish a three-dimensional conductive network, and reduce impedance. The anode material innovatively uses isotropic graphite combined with multi-layer coating technology, turning the movement path of lithium ions from a "tortuous mountain road" into a "straight fast lane". These synergistic innovations further improve the charging and discharging speed of the battery while maintaining its safety.

Of course, the birth of the Cold Core Battery technology also owes to the breakthrough in the production and manufacturing process. For example, the design of a ring welding process for the pole tab - current collector plate - shell can effectively reduce the internal resistance of the battery. Facing the industry problem of loose electrode sheets during cell winding, TAILAN has newly introduced a "spool reinforcement process", which keeps the inside of the battery electrode sheets always tight and eliminates the hidden danger of performance degradation.

It is reported that the Cold Core Battery process not only adapts to a variety of material systems but also significantly improves the universality of the production line through modular design. Different models of batteries can share the core process. While reducing the manufacturing cost, it significantly shortens the mass production cycle, paving the way for large-scale commercial applications.

In terms of charging speed, the 4695 and 50190 series products equipped with the Cold Core Battery technology have made breakthrough progress in charging speed and environmental adaptability. They support 6C ultra-fast charging and can charge from 10% to 80% in 9 minutes. Moreover, these battery products also support stable output under all climatic conditions and maintain stable performance in extreme environments from -30°C to 55°C.

Through the triple breakthroughs in "structure + material + process", the Cold Core large cylindrical battery technology has completed the layout of more than 30 core patents. This product solves the conflict between the fast-charging performance and heat dissipation efficiency of traditional cylindrical batteries, taking the large-scale mass production of large cylindrical batteries a step further.
