Electric Porsche Macan Receives Five-Star Rating in Euro NCAP Test

The electric version of the Porsche Macan has received the highest five-star rating in the Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) test. This four-door sports car performed outstandingly in all test items and received top scores. To ensure the high safety level of its vehicles, Porsche continuously develops and tests new assistance systems, whose performance far exceeds legal requirements. In the Euro NCAP test, the electric Macan proved to be one of the safest models in 2024. Approximately 150 developers, engineers, and test personnel were involved in the development and integration of the new Macan's safety assistance systems, and the development process lasted about three years.

Björn Kern, an expert in Porsche's active safety systems, said: "In the development of these systems, Porsche always goes far beyond the minimum legal requirements to optimize safety." For example, in the Macan, the emergency braking assistance system processes data from the front camera, central radar, and front corner radar. The legal minimum requirement only requires a front camera. The combination of radar and camera expands the field of view and significantly extends the area of effect. With this system, the Macan is able to function in complex situations, such as in the dark, when pedestrians appear from blind spots, or when turning at intersections.

Kern said: "The biggest challenge is to build trust in the system. You only notice them when it's almost too late and a critical situation is about to occur." The upgrade strategy of the assistance system is that the vehicle initially issues a warning, and the driver can still respond. If the driver does not intervene, the assistance system will automatically brake to reduce the consequences of a collision or completely avoid a collision. Euro NCAP emphasizes: "In the response tests with other vehicles, the performance of the automatic emergency braking system (AEB) is sufficient. Collisions were avoided in several tests." The test also positively emphasized the protective effect of the system on pedestrians and cyclists. The lane departure warning and lane change assistance systems also represent significant safety gains. These two systems together improve safety, especially on highways.

Another innovation is the off-vehicle warning system, which provides a visual reminder for road users approaching from the rear at all exits. If there is a risk of a collision, such as with a cyclist, the assistance system delays the opening of the door to minimize the danger. Fatigue and distraction also often cause accidents. The rest recommendation suggests a break when the driver shows signs of fatigue. This recommendation is based on the analysis of driving and lane behavior. In the future, the camera system inside the vehicle will be able to detect microsleep or visual distraction, thereby further improving safety. Despite the innovative assistance systems, the responsibility still lies with the driver.

During the Euro NCAP test, the vehicle spends approximately six to eight weeks on the test track, in the laboratory, and on the road. Four of the six test vehicles were destroyed in the crash test. The safety assistance systems are tested in high-precision, robot-assisted driving tests. Here, the Macan achieved an impressive score of 78%. Euro NCAP rated the protection of vulnerable road users at 83% and the protection of occupants and children at 90% each.
