A tiny amount of powder shedding from the electrode or a single blocked pore on the diaphragm will force the electrolyzer to shut down for maintenance. Hydrogen Zirconium Technology adopts "modified nano-zirconia + ceramic electrode" to block such losses at the upstream of the alkaline electrolyzer.
In alkaline electrolyzers, tiny losses of materials such as electrodes and diaphragms may be amplified into rising energy consumption, unplanned shutdowns for maintenance, and safety risks. Hydrogen Zirconium Technology (Taiyuan) Co., Ltd. focuses on the upstream materials for hydrogen production via water electrolysis: one end is modified nano-zirconia powder, and the other end is the anion exchange membrane (AEM). According to disclosures in public reports, the project has completed laboratory performance verification of core products, is advancing customer sample testing, process adaptation and pilot production line construction, and plans to seek RMB 10 million in angel round financing.
Losses of electrodes and diaphragms ultimately lead to unplanned shutdowns and higher energy consumption
Hydrogen Zirconium Technology has not chosen an abstract proposition of "material upgrading", but specific losses occurring during the operation of electrolyzers. Public project documents state that some existing alkaline electrolyzers adopt the combination of Raney nickel electrodes and traditional PPS diaphragms. Nano-scale powder shedding may occur during the operation of electrodes, and the shed attachments adhering to the surface or pores of the diaphragm will impair the isolation function, and bring risks such as local hot spots and short circuits. Project materials also note that the service life of mainstream alkaline electrolyzers is about 18 to 24 months, and fault shutdowns and rework will increase operating costs.
On the material side, traditional diaphragms also face the challenge of balancing among hydrophilicity, areal resistance and gas isolation capability. For equipment manufacturers, these indicators do not exist in isolation: hydrophilicity affects electrolyte infiltration and ion transport, areal resistance is linked to energy consumption, and gas isolation capability is directly related to the risk of gas mixing. The AEM route is also in the stage of engineering scaling, and public project materials list ion conduction, strong alkali stability and mechanical strength as key indicators that domestic products need to further verify.
Therefore, the target customers of Hydrogen Zirconium Technology mainly focus on water electrolysis hydrogen production equipment enterprises, diaphragm enterprises and new material processing enterprises. These customers do not purchase a single chemical, but material solutions that can be integrated into the processes of electrodes, diaphragms or membrane modules and remain stable under actual electrolyzer operating conditions.
Two material routes targeting ALK and AEM respectively
On the alkaline electrolysis (ALK) side, Hydrogen Zirconium Technology takes modified nano-zirconia powder as the base material. According to public disclosures, this powder has a purity of 99.9% and a particle size of about 30 nanometers, and can be used for composite diaphragms and ceramic electrodes. Project materials state that after adding the modified zirconium powder, the contact angle of the composite diaphragm drops to 44°, the areal resistance drops to 0.12Ω·cm², and the bubble point pressure rises to 3.0 bar; these data correspond to test dimensions such as hydrophilicity, ion transport and gas isolation capability, and whether these performances can be maintained during long-term operation requires more verification under downstream working conditions.
Another path proposed by the project is "ceramic electrode + composite diaphragm". The logic is to replace the traditional Raney nickel electrode with ceramic materials to reduce electrode powder shedding, and then form particle interception through a composite diaphragm with finer pore size. The value of this solution does not lie in adding a new product name, but in trying to integrate the electrode and diaphragm into the same set of stability design. The project page shows that Hydrogen Zirconium Technology is simultaneously planning a pilot line with an annual output of 200 tons of modified nano-zirconia powder, and building a small-scale AEM membrane verification production line.
In terms of AEM, the team's publicly disclosed product is a random branched polyarylpiperidine anion exchange membrane with a thickness of about 60μm. Project materials state that its ion exchange capacity can reach 2.75mmol/g, the hydroxide conductivity at 80℃ is 156mS/cm, and it has undergone 60 days of stability test in an environment of 80℃ and 1M sodium hydroxide; in single cells or experimental devices, the project also discloses operating data of 6.5A/cm² current density and more than 200 hours of operation at 100℃. [1] For early-stage material projects, these results indicate that the product has moved from formula design to the stage of laboratory and sample verification, but it still needs to go through third-party testing, customer process adaptation, batch consistency and cost verification before large-scale, long-cycle, replicable commercial supply.
Prioritize sample testing, commercialization is still in its early stage
Hydrogen Zirconium Technology adopts the B2B model. Its current revenue sources are focused on the sales of modified nano-zirconia powder and AEM membranes, and technical licensing and customized material development will be considered in the long term. The customer acquisition path described in public project materials is: first provide samples to customers, complete performance testing, then carry out joint R&D, and finally enter the supply chain. This path conforms to the import rule of material enterprises, but it also means that the sales cycle usually depends on customer verification and equipment iteration, rather than simple market promotion.
On the customer side, the nano-zirconia powder has been connected with diaphragm-related enterprises such as Carbon Energy Technology, Zhongke Hydrogen Easy, and Yuantai New Materials, while the AEM membrane has been connected with electrolyzer enterprises such as Stable Stone Hydrogen Energy, China Power Fengye, and Sky Hydrogen Energy; the report also states that the products have obtained million-level intentional orders from leading customers.
In addition to hydrogen production materials, the team also masters the relevant processes of zirconium-hafnium separation, and takes the application of high-purity zirconia and high-purity hafnia in the semiconductor, nuclear industry, aerospace and other fields as the long-term direction. However, these applications are still in the stage of expanding business boundaries, and the main products and verification scenarios of the current project are still concentrated in water electrolysis hydrogen production materials.
Team and financing plan, next step depends on production line construction and order fulfillment
Hydrogen Zirconium Technology was established on January 6, 2026. The industrial and commercial registration information shows that its registered capital is RMB 1 million, and Sun Bo is the legal representative; the shareholder information disclosed on the 36Kr project page shows that Sun Bo holds 100% of the shares. The project team includes founder Sun Bo, technical director Song Jing, and chief scientist Li Nanwen: public materials summarize their experiences as central SOE management and hydrogen energy industry operation, zirconium-hafnium extraction and zirconia powder R&D, membrane material R&D and scientific research project hosting respectively.
In terms of financing, public project reports show that Hydrogen Zirconium Technology plans to launch a RMB 10 million angel round, and the funds are intended to be used for R&D optimization, core team building, small-scale mass production line construction and verification, market expansion and intellectual property layout. [1] Short-term plans include completing the 100-ton-level powder production line and promoting bulk supply, and the medium-term goal is to expand production capacity, enter the supply chains of more mainstream enterprises, and promote the bulk shipment of AEM membranes. The above content belongs to project planning, and does not equate to completed operating results.
For Hydrogen Zirconium Technology, the three most critical verification points in the next stage are: whether the modified powder and AEM membrane can maintain their performance under the actual working conditions of customers, whether the pilot line can stably produce products that meet consistency requirements, and whether the intentional orders can be converted into sustainable revenue. If these links can be verified step by step, zirconium-based materials can further become purchasable components in the electrolyzer supply chain from laboratory indicators.
