Shenzhen Microstep launches the world's first 799g 14-inch open thin and light notebook ODM solution

The ODM track for ultra-slim and lightweight laptops has ushered in a new breakthrough, and the world's first 799g 14-inch x86 Laptop is developed in Shenzhen

For a long time, the extreme weight reduction breakthrough in the ultra-light laptop track has always been tied to exclusive high-end flagship solutions: either relying on scarce special materials to drive up costs, or being the self-developed closed loop of leading terminal brands, which is almost inaccessible to small and medium-sized brands. Recently, Shenzhen-based ODM vendor Thundobot Information has jointly launched the world's first 799g 14-inch X86 laptop solution with Acer, which is equipped with a 50Wh large-capacity battery. It turns the extreme lightweight technology from the exclusive technology of a single brand into an open and reusable platform-based capability, opening up new space for the popularization of ultra-light laptops across the entire laptop industry. Previously, the 16-inch 999g mass-produced lightweight laptop with the solution provided by Thundobot for Acer has been in mass production for one year, and no manufacturer has matched its weight record in the 16-inch segment so far. The launch of this 14-inch solution marks that Thundobot's extreme lightweight technology has completed the upgrade from a single-point breakthrough to a reusable platform capability.

Thundobot's exploration of extreme lightweight laptop solutions was first launched in 2024. It initially targeted the unmet market demand for large-size ultra-light laptops, and invested a team to pre-research the lightweight platform architecture. In September 2025, the 16-inch 999g mass-produced lightweight laptop Acer SwiftAir equipped with Thundobot's solution was officially released at the IFA Exhibition, completing the first-phase technical verification and accumulating a full set of mass-producible engineering experience. On this basis, Thundobot launched the R&D of the 14-inch solution, migrated the mass-production-verified platform architecture across different sizes, spent nearly a year completing technical debugging and manufacturability verification, and finally launched the 799g 14-inch X86 mass production solution in 2026. During the R&D process, the core challenge for the team was to balance battery capacity, performance release and mass production yield while reducing the weight. The team repeatedly adjusted every structural design through simulation tests to finally achieve the balance of all indicators.

Different from the previous extreme lightweight routes in the industry, Thundobot has taken a more universally applicable innovative path. At the material and process level, it does not take the "single-plank bridge" of high-end magnesium-lithium alloy, but adopts the composite shell route of carbon fiber + magnesium-aluminum alloy: the A/D sides use carbon fiber composite material to reduce weight, and the keyboard area of the C side retains magnesium-aluminum alloy to ensure structural rigidity. Its core technology lies in reducing the wall thickness of non-stressed areas under the premise of ensuring structural strength through simulation topology optimization, and completing DFM manufacturability analysis in advance to balance yield and cost. It can also be downward compatible with ordinary metal solutions according to brand positioning, solving the problem of high cost and high process threshold of magnesium-lithium alloy solutions that are difficult to popularize. At the internal stacking level, Thundobot adopts the high-density Stack stacking technology for the motherboard, with on-board LPDDR5 memory and a replaceable M.2-2280 SSD. It re-plans the layout of core components through simulation to reduce the PCB area, and fits a 50Wh large-capacity battery into the 799g body, while retaining the full-featured Type-C interface, breaking the industry's dilemma that "weight reduction means smaller battery". At the heat dissipation architecture level, Thundobot customized an ultra-thin fan with a thickness of only 4mm, the thinnest part of the fan blade is only 0.12mm, paired with a copper-aluminum composite heat dissipation module consisting of a 0.5mm high thermal conductivity copper plate, high-density aluminum fins and D8 heat pipe, which supports 15W standard power consumption release of the Intel WildcatLake platform, solving the industry pain point of ultra-light laptops that are light but prone to frequency reduction. The more core difference is that Thundobot is an open ODM platform for brand customers across the industry, rather than a self-developed closed loop of terminal brands, which means that the 799g-level extreme lightweight can be directly introduced into mass production, and is no longer the exclusive configuration of a single brand.

In terms of market demand, 14 inches is the mainstream size in the laptop market, and consumers' demand for portability continues to rise. According to the previous report released by IDC, the global shipment of lightweight laptops in 2025 has accounted for more than 66% of the total laptop market, of which 14-inch lightweight laptops account for nearly 40%, but there are very few mass-produced products with weight below 800g, and most of them are positioned in the high-end market above 10,000 yuan, leaving a clear product gap in the mid-range market. The launch of Thundobot's reusable solution will help more terminal brands launch 800g-level 14-inch ultra-light laptops with lower development costs and faster time-to-market cycles, which is expected to drive product upgrading in the mid-range ultra-light laptop market with broad industry space.

In the future, Thundobot will continue to improve the technical layout of the extreme lightweight platform, promote the development of solutions of different sizes and different positioning, further consolidate the platform-based reuse capability, and empower more brand customers to launch ultra-light laptop products that combine extreme portability, performance and cost advantages.

At present, some terminal brands have completed product planning based on this solution. Relevant industry insiders commented that "Thundobot's solution has lowered the threshold of extreme lightweight. The top lightweight products that could only be made by leading brands in the past can now be followed by more brands, which will bring consumers more cost-effective choices". A person in charge of R&D of a brand that has tested the solution said, "Directly introducing the mature pre-research platform saves at least one third of the R&D cycle compared with developing from scratch, and the yield is also stable, which is very practical for us".

The relevant person in charge of Thundobot said that the original intention of doing this is to see the pain points of the ultra-light track. Many brands want to make extreme lightweight products but are blocked by the upstream technical threshold. We just want to complete the difficult pre-research work in advance, so that brands can focus on user operation and market promotion which they are good at. The deepest feeling along the way is that the laptop ODM industry is not just about OEM. Only by precipitating single-point engineering capabilities into a reusable platform can we truly promote the progress of the entire industry. We will also continue to dig deep in the lightweight track and develop more technical solutions that benefit the whole industry.
