What has replaced it is a mobile phone mounted on a tripod, or a tablet laid flat directly on the desktop.

For a very long time in the past, voice recorders were to journalists what scalpels are to surgeons — an inalienable productivity tool. From Sony's micro cassette recorders to Olympus's digital IC voice recorders, hardware manufacturers have competed fiercely in noise reduction, battery life and storage capacity for 30 years. But today, this hardware arms race seems to have been brought to an abrupt halt.

Because the anxiety plaguing the content industry has long since changed.

In this era of cutthroat traffic competition where breaking news is released by the second and in-depth reports are published by the day, the pain point of content creators has shifted from "how to clearly save the audio" to "how to turn this damn 3-hour recording into a publishable draft within 10 minutes".

In my opinion, the demise and restructuring of the voice recorder form is far more than a simple hardware iteration. Because the mobile phone is an "attention-distracting terminal".

In a serious business interview, WeChat messages or sales calls that pop up on the mobile phone at any time will not only interrupt the recording, but also instantly break the deep conversation atmosphere that has been built with great effort. Faced with such a powerful and staggering tool as the AI voice recorder, many media peers will have a deep professional anxiety: When AI can perfectly record everything, summarize everything, and even write logically rigorous first drafts on its own, where is the moat for journalists and content creators?

My answer is: The moat lies not in "recording", but in "insight"; not in "listening", but in "asking".

In the past, too much of our brain power was consumed by the fear of "missing information". We stared intently at the red light of the voice recorder, busy typing shorthand on the keyboard, but ignored the trace of hesitation that flashed in the interviewee's eyes when he or she talked about a sensitive topic; we tried to record every single word, but forgot to use empathy to feel the subtle temperature change in the air at the scene.

The advent of the AI era is not to replace journalists' ears, but to liberate journalists' minds.

Machines can transcribe the most accurate text, but they cannot capture human micro-expressions; large language models can summarize the most rigorous logic, but they cannot ask that soul-stirring "next question" that can only be conceived based on human intuition, empathy and business acumen.

Get rid of that physical voice recorder.

In the AI era, let machines do the dirty and tiring work that they are supposed to do, and we can finally go into battle with a light load, to defend the ultimate insight into truth and human nature that belongs exclusively to human beings.

This is the only path to redemption for content creators in this productivity "battle royale".
