On September 14, the consumer version of Doubao Mobile Assistant was officially released.

After such a long wait, this product has finally moved from last year's technical preview version to the hands of ordinary consumers.

At the end of last year, when ByteDance and ZTE cooperated to launch the Nubia M153, Leitech had already reported on this product. At that time, it was the only Agent assistant on the market that could directly perform tasks for users on mobile phones: searching for products, comparing prices, ordering takeout, booking flight tickets. With just one sentence, it could identify the screen content, then open the corresponding app and operate step by step on its own.

How exaggerated was the response at that time?

According to domestic media reports, the Nubia M153 priced at 3499 yuan was quickly sold out, and a quotation of 4999 yuan once appeared on Xianyu. Although it was only a small-batch released engineering prototype, its discussion popularity was higher than many official flagship phones.

Unfortunately, problems came one after another. Some users said that when using Doubao Mobile Assistant to operate WeChat and Taobao, they encountered unexpected exits or even login failures. The manufacturer responded that this might have triggered security risk control measures. Doubao then removed the ability to operate some applications, and restricted the application in financial, incentive-earning and some game scenarios.

No matter it was due to account risks or the fear of losing user entrances, Doubao, which launched the GUI Agent on mobile phones very early, has hit a wall that the entire industry will face sooner or later in advance.

For the consumer version released today, Byte has obviously spent a lot of time dealing with these old problems.

The function of operating mobile phones is retained, meanwhile Doubao has announced the SAEP Screen Automated Operation Statement Protocol, through which third-party apps can independently declare which operations are allowed to be performed by AI and which are explicitly rejected. The official stated that if developers reject relevant operations, Doubao Mobile Assistant will not continue to execute automatically.

Privacy and security protection has been made more meticulous, the official mentioned that data processing follows the principles of reasonableness, necessity and independent user control, and a layered and graded Agent protection system has been added.

The functions are much more abundant than last year, now Doubao supports multiple wake-up methods such as voice and AI key, and can complete tasks by combining the content captured by the camera. In the official demonstration, when the user scans the home decoration with the mobile phone, Doubao can understand the user's scenario and actual needs, and search for cabinets that meet the required size and price on the e-commerce platform.

You can even ask it to find the expiration date of your Hong Kong and Macau travel permit from a large number of text messages, or look up the specific details of yesterday's Feishu meeting, just like a real digital butler.

Putting the product itself aside, as a digital editor, I think the most interesting thing is the trend of the industry.

Interestingly, almost all the new flagship phones released by major manufacturers this year have followed the path of system-level Agent, adding capabilities including screen understanding, cross-app execution and personal information retrieval. This precisely proves that the direction ByteDance explored under pressure in the first place is correct, and Doubao's vision is indeed very long-term.

Backed by ByteDance's powerful multi-modal large model base, Doubao will not lose to any hardware manufacturer in the understanding of real scenarios and execution experience.
