Elon Musk makes a move in AI programming
Shortly after being integrated into SpaceXAI under Elon Musk's banner, Cursor, an AI programming startup, officially launched Origin, a code hosting platform.
A Code Hosting Platform is a cloud server website for storing and managing code, serving as a cloud drive and collaborative repository for code. GitHub, the world's largest gathering place for open source projects, also falls into this category.
Compared with traditional products, Origin is positioned as a Git code hosting platform specifically designed for the AI Agent era, with deep integration of the Cursor editor. User codes, stacked PRs (Pull Requests), and agents are all centralized in one place, where agents can directly modify codes and read review statuses without human intervention.
In addition, Origin can be directly connected to GitHub and displayed side by side with hosted repositories. For projects synced from GitHub, Origin updates codes in real time, allowing developers to browse, search and pull codes directly in Cursor.
Coincidentally, right when the AI Agent-oriented Origin was launched, GitHub under Microsoft suffered a large-scale unexpected outage, with a large number of users reporting that they could not access the website normally, load code repositories or use related development services.
At the same time, users on the social platform X have launched discussions on the competitive relationship between Origin and GitHub.
Affected by this, Microsoft's stock price fell by more than 3%, with its market value evaporating by hundreds of billions overnight.
It is worth noting that the model capability of Cursor may deeply rely on the computing power of SpaceXAI.
On August 14, Cursor announced that it had been officially acquired by SpaceXAI, claiming that it will have access to the world's largest GPU cluster to obtain the computing power required to build more powerful models with lower operating costs. It stated that it will be committed to making Grok the most useful AI in the world, and improving functions including Grok Build, Grok Bot, Grok API and Cursor.
For Elon Musk, the acquisition of Cursor means entering the lucrative AI programming market.
Earlier this month, Elon Musk stated at a SpaceX staff meeting that the company "must succeed in the software field". He emphasized that artificial intelligence is the core of SpaceX's current and future development, and AI revenue will exceed all other revenue of SpaceX by September.
Huatai Securities believes that Coding is extending from a code auxiliary tool to a long-duration task execution platform. Developers use it frequently in code completion, debugging, testing, refactoring and project-level development. A single user usually continuously generates input, output, long context and tool call Tokens, and the improvement of model capability is more easily converted into developer payments and enterprise procurement.
The institution emphasized that compared with general chat products, Coding products have a relatively deeper embedding degree in codebase context, tool configuration and team collaboration processes, and model switching usually also involves adjustments to the working environment and collaboration workflows. General chat is more conducive to establishing user entry and brand awareness, while Coding is more likely to form high-frequency calls, enterprise procurement and high-value Token revenue.
