ByteDance Strictly Prohibits Distilling Open-Source Models Internally

On August 6, a reporter learned from an internal source at ByteDance that the rapid development of open-source models from domestic competitors this year has brought greater pressure to ByteDance. At a recent internal meeting, Zhang Yiming, founder of ByteDance, stated that the development of models should adhere to long-termism and delayed gratification, rather than using others' outputs to obtain temporary rankings on leaderboards.

Since the beginning of this year, competition in domestic large AI models has become extremely fierce, with new models being released almost every few days. Every time a powerful new open-source model is released, the internal debate over distillation within ByteDance heats up. The reporter of The Paper learned that Zhang Yiming rarely speaks at meetings of the Seed team, but this time he made a clear statement that ByteDance "should be willing to sacrifice part of the short-term gains for long-term goals".

It is understood that ByteDance has strictly prohibited the distillation of open-source models internally, and even strengthened relevant internal restrictions through methods such as API detection. Zhang Yiming believes that distillation will interfere with the real long-term technological breakthroughs. (The Paper)

On August 6, CITIC Securities released a research report pointing out that at present, leverage among South Korean retail investors has been rapidly reduced, but the observed indicators show that risks have not been fully cleared. The margin financing balance of brokerages shrank by 10% on a single day on July 31, hitting the largest decline within the year, indicating that on-exchange leverage is still deleveraging at a fast pace. Meanwhile, the amount of retail investors' forced liquidation due to margin calls on July 30 and 31 still exceeded 1 trillion Korean won, and the forced liquidation rate remained at a high level of 7%-8%, far higher than the 1% level under stable market conditions. The scale of South Korea's market stabilization fund is limited, and there are moral hazards for the National Pension Service of Korea to enter the market. It is expected that the subsequent market volatility will remain at a relatively high level. (National Business Daily)

Multiple futures companies have terminated their cooperation with intermediaries, and customer acquisition in the industry has entered a new stage of competition focused on professional value

Since August, futures companies including Yide Futures, Cinda Futures, Zhongyuan Futures, Hongta Futures and Guolian Futures have successively released announcements to terminate intermediary business cooperation with all their intermediaries, and prohibit any institution or individual from engaging in relevant activities in the name of the company's intermediary. The daily services for customers introduced by former intermediaries will be directly taken over by the company's customer managers or official customer service personnel. The latest data from the China Futures Association shows that as of August 4, the number of remaining active intermediaries of futures companies is only 36, a sharp decrease from more than 40,000 at the peak, indicating that the "de-intermediarization" process in the industry is nearing its end. In this regard, interviewees said that this is an inevitable result of the futures industry shifting its development focus from "scale orientation" to "quality orientation". As regulators put forward increasingly higher requirements for appropriateness management and investor protection, and futures operating institutions advance high-quality development, the customer acquisition channels of the industry will step into a new stage of competition for professional value. Strong demand and high industry prosperity, the impact of "noise" in the optical module sector is limited

Affected by a rumor involving the export of optical modules, after the A-share market opened on August 5, the stock prices of the leading optical module enterprises nicknamed "Yi Zhong Tian" (Eoptolink, InnoLight, TFC) opened sharply lower. In response, many industry insiders stated in interviews with reporters that as early as 2025, news that products including optical modules might be subject to export restrictions had circulated in the market, and the industry had already anticipated this situation and made partial preparations. In the short and medium term, given factors such as robust market demand, China's massive production capacity, extremely high operational efficiency and lower costs, the possibility of overseas regions strictly banning imports of Chinese optical modules is relatively low, and the industry will face limited impact. However, in the long run, the market share of Chinese manufacturers in some overseas markets may be affected to a certain extent. (Shanghai Securities News)

Barclays: Humanoid robots may achieve large-scale deployment after 2035

Analysts at Barclays said in a research report that the large-scale deployment of humanoid robots is likely to be realized after 2035. They pointed out that much of the current hype surrounding humanoid robots reflects pre-programmed demonstrations, manually controlled remote operations, or automation for specific tasks, rather than true general-purpose autonomy. To achieve true general-purpose autonomy, humanoid robots need to have "perception, reasoning and adaptive behavior". The deployment of humanoid robots may eventually follow a similar trajectory to that of self-driving cars, which has taken more than a decade to develop. Therefore, they stated that large-scale commercial applications are more likely to arrive around 2035 than 2030, while near-term deployments will be focused on narrow, controlled industrial application scenarios. TSMC's N2 process capacity is sufficient but DRAM is in short supply, putting pressure on Apple's iPhone 18 stocking preparation

Independent technology journalist Tim Culpan says that only a few weeks are left before the launch of Apple's iPhone 18 series and the foldable-screen iPhone Ultra. The A20 Pro processor wafers produced with TSMC's N2 process have good yield performance and sufficient production capacity. However, due to the severe shortage of DRAM memory supply, the finished processor wafers cannot go through subsequent packaging, leading to inventory backlogs and bringing pressure on Apple and its supply chain for stocking. Tim Culpan stated that Apple and its supply chain assemblers are urgently seeking more supply of DRAM chips for mobile devices. At present, Apple mainly relies on Micron Technology for DRAM supply, and also purchases related products from SK Hynix and Samsung. Tim Culpan noted that TSMC's N2 process is not the bottleneck affecting iPhone shipments, and the production of A20 Pro processor is basically ready. (Jiemian News)
