Emissium, a Swiss clean technology company, was founded in 2023. The company is committed to developing software for electricity carbon dioxide emission factor data. This software can provide comprehensive real-time electricity carbon dioxide emission factor data and predict electricity prices and carbon emissions through machine learning, thereby helping enterprises simplify energy management, reduce emissions, and lower operating costs.
Emissium is a spin-off company of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), co-founded by Rafael Castro-Amoedo and Alessio Santecchia. Rafael Castro-Amoedo is the CEO of the company. He holds a doctorate in energy from EPFL and currently serves as one of the 30 EU Young Energy Ambassadors. Alessio Santecchia is the CTO of the company. He also holds a doctorate in energy from EPFL and used to be a researcher at EPFL.

The electricity carbon dioxide emission factor refers to the amount of carbon dioxide emissions caused by the power generation process when consuming 1 kilowatt-hour (1 kWh) of electricity. It includes various statistical scopes such as national, regional, and provincial levels. It is mainly used for enterprises to calculate the carbon emissions of electricity consumption and is a core indicator to measure the low-carbon process of the power system. Currently, the vast majority of electricity carbon dioxide emission factor data are national annual average data. Such data can only be used for accounting and summary, and it is difficult to reveal the whole picture. Enterprises lack real-time data to guide and arrange daily production electricity consumption.

Emissium has developed software for electricity carbon dioxide emission factor data. Similar to creating a digital twin model of the power grid, it can draw a real-time supply and demand map of electricity carbon dioxide emission factors and provide historical, real-time, and predicted data to support enterprise energy management and transaction management.
Emissium's software can provide comprehensive real-time electricity data at a high frequency. The software updates electricity data every 15 minutes, and more than 90% of the data comes from public data sources. Its data collection scope covers more than 2,000 regions at the levels of European countries, large provinces, and municipalities. The data items cover more than a dozen environmental indicators such as carbon emissions, the proportion of renewable energy, and the proportion of nuclear energy. In addition to real-time data, the software also supports the retrieval and download service of historical data for up to two years, which is convenient for enterprises to query and understand the historical situation of electricity consumption in their regions.
Based on existing historical and real-time data, Emissium's software uses a machine learning model to predict the electricity prices and carbon dioxide emission factor curves for a period of time in the future based on weather factors such as sunlight, wind, and water flow, as well as driving factors such as electricity demand, the operation of renewable energy, cross-regional power flow, the possibility of operation interruption, and the prices of fuels such as natural gas and coal, thereby helping enterprises select and optimize their production energy plans. Compared with the existing national-level data in the market, Emissium's software can provide more detailed data at a lower level. At the same time, compared with the 24 - 48-hour prediction time range of its competitors, Emissium can extend the prediction time range to two weeks, further facilitating enterprises' energy arrangements.
Emissium can effectively help data centers and electricity-consuming enterprises optimize their operation strategies in the scenario of dispatchable loads, reduce operating costs and electricity carbon emissions. For data centers, Emissium's software can assist enterprises in scheduling their operation time to low-price periods, and a single data center can save 50,000 euros in operating costs per year. For other electricity-consuming enterprises or energy consulting companies, Emissium's software can provide more detailed electricity data for customers, help continuously track emission situations, and formulate energy strategies, reducing carbon emissions by up to 30%. At present, Emissium's software has assisted various institutions in reducing carbon dioxide emissions by a total of 400 tons.
In March 2025, Emissium received an investment of 500,000 euros from b2ventures. The funds will be used to further expand the company's business in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the Iberian Peninsula.
