Google officially announced the Android system for computers.
Google will launch a brand - new computer operating system, "Android for PC", based on the Android system next year. It will also integrate Gemini and the Android AI ecosystem, aiming to achieve seamless collaboration between laptops and mobile phones.
At the end of Qualcomm Snapdragon's new product launch event early on the 25th, Google made a grand appearance and announced that it will combine Gemini and the Android mobile phone system to launch an "Android computer operating system" (Android for PC) next year.
Sameer Samat, the person in charge of Google's Android ecosystem, said at the launch event:
Considering the laptop form factor, we've actually had ChromeOS for a long time... Meanwhile, we also have Android tablets. These products have been very successful and are gradually evolving into more powerful productivity tools. So I think the current opportunity is how to accelerate the AI progress we've made in the Android ecosystem and bring them to laptops as soon as possible, while enabling laptops to work seamlessly with the entire Android ecosystem.
Samat said that what Google is doing is basically to retain the user experience of ChromeOS while rebuilding it with the Android system at the underlying technology level. The company is very excited about this combination that will be launched next year and is working with partners such as Qualcomm to promote it.
It's worth mentioning that Cristiano Amon, the CEO of Qualcomm, also hyped up the "Android PC" at Wednesday's launch event. When on stage with Rick Osterloh, the senior vice - president of Google's devices and services, he revealed that he had seen a version of the "Android PC". Amon said excitedly: "I've seen it, and it's amazing. It realizes the vision of integrating mobile devices and personal computers. I can't wait to own one."
Osterloh also disclosed that Google's plan is to introduce Gemini, the complete Android AI stack, as well as the complete app and developer community into the PC ecosystem.
Currently, the common PC systems in the market are mainly Microsoft Windows and Apple's OS system. Of course, Huawei's HarmonyOS is also rapidly accumulating users.
Of course, although Google didn't explicitly state how it will cooperate with Qualcomm on this matter, the underlying logic is not hard to guess. Qualcomm not only designs flagship mobile phone processors (such as the newly launched Snapdragon 8 Gen 5), but is also now a producer of Arm computer chips.
Early on the 25th, Qualcomm launched the second - generation laptop processors, Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Elite Extreme, claiming them to be "the fastest and most efficient processors in Windows laptops".
Qualcomm claims that the performance of this 3nm - process CPU is up to 31% faster than the previous - generation X Elite, or it can reduce power consumption by 43% at the same performance level.
It's worth noting that, different from last year's launch rhythm, the new - generation Snapdragon PC chips are expected to hit the market in the "first half of 2026".
Qualcomm didn't mention in the announcement whether these chips can be used for the "Android PC". However, given that Google chose Qualcomm's launch event to announce this news, it's reasonable to assume that they will adapt to Qualcomm chips.
