Sam Altman hat Ende 2025 über die Spaltung der Roboter- und Konsumhardwareabteilung gesprochen.

Recently, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, posted information on platform X about hiring employees for robot-related positions.

According to the report, OpenAI Robotics has started the recruitment process and is looking for full-stack hardware, operations, system, and machine learning engineers to develop robots for the physical world. This is regarded as a signal for OpenAI's further expansion from software AI to the fields of Embodied Intelligence.

Altman wrote in a tweet that AI should help people in the physical world. The short-term goal is to develop robots that assist workers in infrastructure development; the long-term goal is for everyone to have a personal robot that can handle the required tasks. This project originated from the world simulation research led by Aditya Ramesh. After one year, it has transformed into OpenAI Robotics, and the progress is based on the joint development of robot hardware and machine learning research.

According to public information, Aditya Ramesh led the development of models like DALL·E and Sora. World simulation technologies such as Sora enable AI to understand the dynamics of the physical world and form the basis for robot control. OpenAI plans to transfer the simulation knowledge to real robots. OpenAI has conducted robot research in the past, but it was stopped due to the focus on language models.

In 2024, the company collaborated with Figure AI on an AI system, but the collaboration was ended, and it switched to in-house development. In early 2025, OpenAI established a laboratory for humanoid robots and hired data collectors to train robotic arms for household tasks. The laboratory will be expanded, and there are plans to open a new laboratory. In addition, the current recruitment includes several positions, such as 3D printing technicians and machine learning engineers.

According to the WSJ, Sam Altman talked about splitting the robot and consumer electronics departments at the end of 2025. The goal was to adopt a structure similar to Alphabet so that these departments could finance and operate independently without affecting the core AI business. The split was put on hold due to the postponement of the IPO.
