After the storm of the traffic accident, Lei Jun made another public appearance.

On May 16th, at the Xiaomi Values Competition, Lei Jun delivered a speech, systematically responding to the high - speed accident for the first time within the company.

Lei Jun admitted that in the past period, Xiaomi had been bombarded with doubts, criticism, and accusations. "Like my colleagues, I was completely stunned all of a sudden."

Although some friends familiar with the automotive industry advised him that traffic accidents are inevitable in car - making, no one expected that this accident would deal such a heavy blow to Xiaomi.

Actually, Xiaomi, which is new to car - making, attaches great importance to safety. In the evaluations of authoritative institutions, the SU7 also received the best scores. However, after this accident, Lei Jun said, "We always thought we were newcomers in the automotive industry." "But society and the public require us to take on the responsibilities of a real industry leader among large companies."

Xiaomi finally realized that the public's expectations and requirements for Xiaomi far exceeded imagination. Xiaomi has lost the novice protection period in any industry, and consumers will demand more from Xiaomi with higher standards.

Lei Jun said that in the past month or so, the management of Xiaomi and the automotive department had held numerous meetings to discuss how to systematically solve safety problems and how to present more convincing business and governance performances to meet the public's higher requirements for Xiaomi.

In the future, the goal of Xiaomi cars will shift to becoming the safest cars in the same class in the field of automotive safety. For a company that has only been in the industry for 4 years, this will undoubtedly be a huge challenge.

Xiaomi officially announced its entry into the car - making business in 2021. By the end of March 2024, its first product, the SU7, was officially launched. To date, the cumulative delivery volume of the SU7 has exceeded 240,000 units. In April 2025, the Xiaomi SU7 even became the sales champion in the Chinese market for vehicles priced over 100,000 yuan, regardless of the vehicle type or energy form.

Currently, the delivery cycle shown on the Xiaomi Car APP is more than 40 weeks. That is to say, if you place an order for the Xiaomi SU7 now, you will pick up the car in March 2026.

In February this year, Xiaomi launched a high - performance model, the SU7 Ultra, with a starting price of 529,900 yuan. For this product with an annual sales target of 10,000 units, the number of large - amount orders exceeded 10,000 within 2 hours after the order - taking began, and reached 19,000 after 72 hours.

For a brand new to car - making, such achievements are truly remarkable.

However, different from products like mobile phones and small household appliances, cars are complex industrial products directly related to users' life safety. Improving safety and quality is an inevitable path for every automotive enterprise.

This safety accident has sounded an alarm for Xiaomi's development. It is never too much for Xiaomi to invest in automotive safety.

The cause of the accident was that the user's car hit the cement guardrail in the middle of the road, and then the whole car was burned until the white body was exposed, resulting in casualties. The driving log released by Xiaomi showed that before the accident, the vehicle was in the NOA pilot - assisted driving mode.

Whether the assisted driving system could correctly identify the construction signs in the accident and whether the car doors could be opened normally after the accident became the focus of attention. And the discussion has gradually spread from Xiaomi cars to the entire industry's supervision of safety and quality.

Soon, the regulatory authorities took action to rectify such safety irregularities.

On April 16th, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a new version of the power battery standard. The technical requirements were upgraded from giving an alarm 5 minutes before the power battery catches fire or explodes to preventing it from catching fire or exploding.

On the same day, the Automotive Review Office of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology convened a meeting of multiple enterprises and put forward specific requirements for the standardized development of intelligent driving, including the naming specification of assisted driving and the functional restrictions open to users.

On May 8th, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology publicly solicited opinions on the revision of the "Safety Technical Requirements for Automobile Door Handles" to solve the safety hazards caused by hidden door handles. On May 16th, the technical requirements for the automatic emergency braking system were also drafted, stipulating that passenger cars will be required to be equipped with relevant functions in the future.

The industry will enter a period of making up for technical and safety deficiencies from the stage of wild growth.

Lei Jun also said in an internal speech that Xiaomi has now clarified its future development path. It will not only build a more complete system but also improve its business and governance performances to meet the public's expectations.

Indeed, from technical requirements, testing and verification, supply chain management to the production process, these are all compulsory courses for car - making. Automotive safety is essentially a systematic ability. Although wild growth can bring some results, it is not conducive to long - term development. After consolidating the safety foundation, the Chinese intelligent electric vehicle industry will move towards more long - term prosperity.

The following is the original text of Lei Jun's speech:

This year is the 15th anniversary of Xiaomi's founding. It's a big event, and we've prepared a series of celebration activities for it. However, at the end of March, an unexpected traffic accident shattered all of this. We were bombarded with doubts, criticism, and accusations. Like my colleagues, I was completely stunned all of a sudden.

A friend familiar with the automotive industry told me, "In car - making, traffic accidents are inevitable." But no one expected that the impact of this accident would be so great and the blow to our Xiaomi would be so heavy.

Looking back four years ago when we decided to enter the car - making business, I was always particularly worried about safety issues. So we attached great importance to the quality and safety of our cars.

Thanks to the efforts of so many colleagues in the automotive team over the past three or four years, in the more than a year since the SU7 was launched, I think the quality has always been something we're proud of. We got the highest scores in all the evaluations of authoritative institutions we participated in.

But unexpectedly, this traffic accident made us realize that the public's expectations and requirements for us far exceeded our imagination.

Actually, it was only at this moment that I truly realized that we always thought we were newcomers in the automotive industry and a startup company.

But this incident made me deeply understand that Xiaomi's scale, influence, and social attention have reached a very high level today. Society and the public require us to take on the responsibilities of a real industry leader among large companies. We've deeply realized that this is an inescapable responsibility for the 15 - year - old Xiaomi.

So today, I want to share with you that the 15 - year - old Xiaomi is no longer a newcomer in the industry. We don't have the novice protection period in any industry, and we need to have higher standards and goals.

So, when it comes to automotive safety, I want to tell you that we want to become the safest cars in the same class in the field of automotive safety. What we need to do is not just to comply with regulations or reach the industry - leading level. As a leader in the automotive industry, we need to achieve safety that (surpasses) the industry level.

On April 1st this year, I told the public on Weibo that Xiaomi will never avoid any problems. "Never avoid" means that we need to face problems and ourselves directly, correct our mistakes, and continuously improve. I know it's very, very difficult to achieve this, which requires everyone's high - level attention and the concerted efforts of our entire team.

In the past month or so, I've had countless meetings with the group's management and the colleagues in the automotive department. Actually, there's only one main point in these meetings - how can we systematically solve the problems? How can we present more convincing business and governance performances to meet the public's higher requirements for us?

This year is the 15th anniversary of Xiaomi. We originally planned a lot of celebration, summary, and planning activities, but most of them have been cancelled. Anyway, I think we still need to seriously summarize the gains and losses of the past 5 years.

Personally, I think the most important thing for Xiaomi in the past 5 years is that we've always adhered to technology as the foundation. Five years ago, we set a new goal - to become the global leader in the new generation of hardcore technology.

Five years ago, we clearly promised to invest more than 100 billion yuan in R & D in five years and increase the R & D of core technologies. So far, we've invested about 105 billion yuan, and the investment this year is expected to exceed 30 billion yuan.

Here today, I want to share an extremely important piece of news: Our self - developed mobile phone SoC chip (Xuanjie 01), Xuanjie O1, is expected to be released by the end of the month.

This is a phased achievement of Xiaomi's 10 - year chip - making journey and a new starting point for Xiaomi to break through in hardcore technology. Chip - making is the earnest expectation of the public and Mi fans, and it's also the only way for Xiaomi to become a leader in hardcore technology. We at Xiaomi will forge ahead bravely.

In 2019, it was a very difficult time for us. We were facing various internal and external problems. At the supplier conference at the end of that year, I said this to our industrial chain partners: "A steady wind tests the strength of grass; a long journey tests the mettle of a horse."

I believe that by now, all our partners can clearly see that Xiaomi today is much stronger than it was 5 years ago. So far, Xiaomi has been established for 15 years. Through so many years of ups and downs and hardships, we've proven our resilience.

I still remember when we founded the company, I thought it would take 15 years for everyone to truly understand and recognize Xiaomi. Now it seems that we were too optimistic. 15 years is not enough. But it doesn't matter. We'll just keep going until the day when we're fully proven.

Today's Xiaomi is far from being the most powerful, but I believe that in terms of perseverance, resilience, not giving up, and being indomitable, no one has more perseverance and patience than us.
