When the capital market is chasing star fusion power generation companies one after another, a more robust development narrative is emerging in Hefei — manufacturing core components for all technical routes. On October 22, Hefei Keye Electro-Physical Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Keye Electro-Physics"), a supplier of core components for controllable nuclear fusion, announced the completion of its financing, with investors including Shanghai Industrial Intellectual Property Fund, Huatai Zijing, Zhongke Yucheng Venture Capital, Dunhong Asset, Shanghai Science & Technology Venture Capital, Matrix Partners China, Hefei Innovation Investment and other institutions. This round of financing marks a new round of capital increment for Keye Electro-Physics after it brought in institutions including Yangtze River Delta Jiliuling Sci-Tech Innovation Fund, Anhui Venture Capital, CITIC Securities Investment Capital, Zijin Mining Asset and other investors. The raised funds will be mainly used for the iteration of core processes applicable to all technical routes, as well as the capacity expansion of its second growth curves in the semiconductor, medical and other sectors.

Capital Joins Forces, Betting on the "Seller of Shovels" Logic in the Fusion Industry Chain

Keye Electro-physics was founded in January 2007, with its headquarters located in Hefei High-Tech Zone. As one of the early private enterprises in China to enter the field of nuclear fusion, Keye Electro-physics has long been deeply engaged in the field of fusion engineering equipment, and has deeply participated in the construction of major domestic and international scientific projects and fusion devices such as ITER, EAST, BEST, CRAFT, forming product and engineering capabilities covering core links including superconducting magnets, transition feeder systems, vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, heating systems and power supply systems.

From participating in the construction of national major scientific devices to undertaking international fusion engineering projects, from single core components to system integration, and then to the overall delivery of large-scale fusion devices, nearly 20 years of industrial practice has enabled Keye Electro-physics to gradually form fusion engineering capabilities and full-process delivery capabilities that are different from ordinary equipment enterprises.

No matter which route eventually succeeds, whether it is tokamak, stellarator or field-reversed configuration, the integrated delivery of core components and devices is required. Keye has laid out the full technical route of controlled nuclear fusion, and is in the "seller of shovels" track, which is one of the few tracks in the whole industry that is not affected by the risk of technical route iteration.

Moving from "Large Scientific Devices" to Fusion Industrialization, Engineering Capability Becomes the Core Competitiveness

For a long time in the past, the nuclear fusion industry was still in the development stage dominated by scientific research and experimental verification, and the construction of fusion devices was highly dependent on national major scientific projects and research institutes.

As the global fusion industry enters the accelerated stage of engineering and industrialization, industry competition is gradually shifting from "whether it can be designed" to "whether it can solve complex engineering problems, whether it can be manufactured, and whether it can be delivered on schedule with guaranteed quality".

In this process, the importance of fusion core equipment enterprises is increasingly prominent.

Different from traditional industrial equipment, fusion devices involve multi-disciplinary and cross-technologies such as superconductivity, low temperature, vacuum, high-power power supply, precision manufacturing, materials and complex system integration, and put forward extremely high requirements for equipment reliability, manufacturing accuracy, extreme environment adaptability and system collaboration capability. There are not many enterprises that can truly participate in national major scientific devices and international large-scale fusion projects and continuously complete product delivery.

The core advantage of Keye Electro-physics is that it has formed a complete engineering system in long-term major engineering practice: from customer demand analysis, engineering design, to processing and manufacturing, test verification, system integration, and then to factory test, on-site installation and commissioning services, forming engineering delivery capabilities covering the whole life cycle of products. For fusion equipment, drawings can be copied, but the process know-how, quality system and on-site delivery experience formed in long-term major projects are difficult to replicate in a short time. This is also the core barrier formed by Keye Electro-physics after years of verification by large scientific projects.

Deeply Participate in EAST, ITER, CRAFT, BEST, Core Products Verified by Major Global Fusion Projects

Since its establishment, Keye Electro-physics has continuously participated in the construction of major domestic and international fusion scientific projects.

In the international market, Keye Electro-physics has participated in major international fusion projects such as ITER. ITER is one of the largest and most internationally participated fusion scientific projects in the world at present, which puts forward extremely high requirements for suppliers' technical capabilities, quality system and international engineering delivery capabilities. In ITER related projects, the company is mainly responsible for the engineering design and manufacturing of components such as magnet feeder systems, superconducting coils and power supplies in the ITER China procurement package. Among them, the PF6 superconducting magnet weighs about 400 tons, which is extremely difficult to develop and set a world record at that time.

In addition to ITER, Keye Electro-physics has also participated in international fusion projects such as WEST in France, ASDEX in Germany and LAPD in the United States. Among them, the WEST Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) antenna developed by the company has realized the export of Chinese fusion engineering technology to France and has been recognized by relevant international experts.

In China, Keye Electro-physics is deeply involved in the construction and multiple rounds of upgrading of EAST, undertaking product development and engineering tasks in many core links such as neutral beam injection, main vacuum chamber, ion cyclotron resonance heating antenna and superconducting magnet. The BEST project officially started in 2024, and Keye is mainly responsible for the winding of poloidal field and toroidal field coils in the magnet system, as well as the engineering design and processing of core components, including superconducting feeders, ion cyclotron antenna systems, ion cyclotron transmission line systems, divertors in the vacuum chamber and other engineering tasks.

In addition, Keye is deeply involved in the CRAFT project and delivered the CS model coil, which is one of the first successfully developed large-size superconducting central solenoid coils in China, providing valuable experience for the subsequent construction of CFEDR.

The long-term major engineering delivery record has become the most valuable industrial resume of Keye Electro-physics.

More Than "Manufacturing Components": From Core Components to System Integration, and Then to Complete Machine Delivery

The technical barrier of fusion equipment is not only reflected in whether a certain component can be manufactured, but also in the coupling of multiple complex subsystems, and finally realizing the overall operation of the device.

The outstanding capability of Keye Electro-physics is that it has gradually extended from individual products to system integration and overall engineering delivery.

At present, the company has formed capabilities covering multiple core fusion subsystems such as superconducting magnet systems, transition feeder systems, vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, heating systems, and power supply systems. Based on long-term project practice, Keye Electro-physics has further developed from "product delivery" to "system delivery".

The company has undertaken overall delivery tasks including engineering design, manufacturing, assembly, commissioning and on-site installation for experimental devices such as CFQS, KTX and HFRC. For large-scale scientific research devices, overall delivery means that enterprises need to undertake interface management, manufacturing coordination, installation and commissioning and final operation guarantee between different professional systems at the same time, whose capabilities cannot be simply replicated by a single equipment supplier.

This means that the core competitiveness of Keye Electro-physics is evolving from single product capability to fusion device engineering delivery capability.

Extending Outward from Fusion, Homologous Technology Opens Up Larger Industrial Space

The development of the fusion industry is also promoting the spillover of underlying technologies such as superconductivity, low temperature, vacuum, precision manufacturing, and high-power power supply to more industrial fields.

In fact, Keye Electro-physics' business is not limited to fusion. From the perspective of industrial logic, many underlying capabilities required for fusion equipment are technically common with high-end semiconductor equipment, particle accelerators and medical equipment. With the continuous advancement of fusion industrialization, Keye Electro-physics takes fusion as the core fulcrum, and has expanded to related high-end equipment fields such as semiconductors, accelerators, medical treatment, opening up a broader market space.

Continuous Capital Investment, Fusion Equipment Industrialization Enters a New Stage

This Series A financing is jointly invested by Shanghai Industrial Intellectual Property Fund, Huatai Zijing, Zhongke Yucheng Venture Capital, Dunhong Asset and Shanghai Science & Technology Venture Capital. The Series A+ round has introduced well-known institutions such as Matrix Partners China and Hefei Innovation Investment.

The participation of many professional investment institutions not only reflects the capital market's recognition of Keye Electro-physics' long-term technical accumulation and industrial value, but also reflects that the fusion industry is gradually moving from the "large scientific engineering era" dominated by scientific research projects to a more extensive industrialization stage.

For Keye Electro-physics, capital support will further support the company's continuous investment in the field of fusion core equipment, and promote the transformation of existing technologies, products and engineering experience into large-scale industrial applications.

Over the past 20 years, Keye Electro-physics started from participating in national major scientific projects, and completed technical accumulation, process precipitation and engineering capability iteration in the delivery of major projects again and again. Now, as the global fusion industry enters the accelerated stage of engineering, these long-term accumulations are being transformed from scientific research project experience into industrial capabilities with real commercial value.

In the future, as the global fusion industry gradually enters the stage of engineering implementation, Keye Electro-physics is expected to continue to take core equipment such as superconducting magnets, feeders, vacuum, low temperature, heating and power supplies as the starting point, further expand the capabilities of the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain, and promote itself to move from "core equipment supplier for large scientific devices" to an important engineering equipment platform in the era of fusion industrialization.
