Changdu's overseas short drama matrix is exposed, the "slow chess" logic in the era of AI short dramas
In mid-July this year, MoboDrama, an APP under Changdu Technology, a long-time player in the Chinese web fiction overseas distribution track, quietly launched paid traffic acquisition campaigns.
Different from the mainstream industry practice of "starting user acquisition immediately after launch", this product was listed on app stores as early as March, but did not officially enter the market until 4 months later. This is no oversight: among the 5 overseas short drama APPs in Changdu Technology's existing portfolio, MoboDrama is the only product fully focused on AI-generated short dramas and comic dramas. Its "late arrival" reflects a development path in the AI short drama track that is completely different from industry norms.
I. What is MoboDrama?
MoboDrama is developed by Chengdu Fengmingxuan Network Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Changdu Technology, and launched on both Apple and Google app stores in March this year. In terms of product features, its bottom navigation bar has four entrances: Recommend, Home, Playlist, and Personal Center. The homepage covers category labels such as New Dramas, Romance, Anime, and Werewolf, which shows no obvious difference from similar short drama APPs on the market.
The difference lies in content. All episodes on MoboDrama are AI-generated dramas and comic dramas, with no live-action short dramas found, which is consistent with its product introduction that it is "a surreal story universe entirely driven by artificial intelligence". In terms of payment model, MoboDrama adopts the IAAP model: in addition to paid subscriptions, users can unlock 50 episodes per day by watching advertisements.
In terms of traffic investment, the APP was first detected to carry out paid traffic acquisition by ADX Overseas Short Drama Edition under DataEye on July 17. After the launch, the daily volume of launched materials remained between 200 and 300 groups, which belongs to low-intensity tentative investment.
II. Why Wait for 4 Months?
For a product that was launched in March but did not start traffic investment until July, DataEye Research Institute believes there are three main underlying logics.
The first is the practical consideration of content reserve. For a pure AI short drama platform, the production of AI dramas and comic dramas itself requires a cycle. If large-scale traffic investment is carried out when the content inventory is insufficient, users will find no episodes to watch after pouring in, and the retention data will collapse directly. Building the content library before starting user acquisition is essentially the basic logic of "content-driven growth". The 4 months in the initial stage after launch is most likely the window for content reserve and product polishing.
The second is to wait for the maturity of the industry ecosystem. MoboDrama was launched at a delicate time point. In February this year, ByteDance released the Seedance 2.0 video generation model, which directly ignited the AI short drama track. MoboDrama was launched in less than a month, occupying the ecological niche, but at that time the entire commercial closed loop of AI short drama had not been completed. Choosing to officially launch traffic investment a few months later, when a number of leading manufacturers are increasing their investment in AI short dramas, can significantly reduce trial and error costs.
Third, Changdu Technology is in no hurry to launch new products. This company, which started its overseas distribution business in the web fiction era, has deployed at least 5 APPs in the overseas short drama market (see details below), covering different markets and content types. MoboDrama does not need to undertake the growth task alone, so its promotion rhythm can naturally be more leisurely: reserve content first, verify the market process, and then gradually expand the investment scale.
III. Matrix Logic of the 5 APPs
If the "slowness" of MoboDrama is the appearance, the overseas short drama product matrix of Changdu Technology is the key to understanding this set of strategies.
At present, Changdu Technology's overseas short drama layout includes 5 products: MoboReels, MoboShort, BestReels, MiniDrama and MoboDrama, covering various content forms such as live-action short dramas, translated dramas, and AI-generated dramas. Taken together, this matrix is not simply "launching several more APPs", but has a clear hierarchical logic.
In terms of market dimension, MoboReels, as the core brand, focuses on T1 markets with high ARPU such as Europe, America, Japan and South Korea, and is the starting point and base foundation of Changdu Technology's short drama overseas business. MoboShort can be regarded as its sub-brand supplement, launched about 10 months after MoboReels. In the early stage, it mainly imported and translated domestic short dramas, and its revenue sources are not only from the United States and Japan, but also a large part from emerging Southeast Asian markets such as Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand. MiniDrama further sinks, targeting T2 to T3 level markets such as Central Asia (e.g. Kazakhstan) and Africa (e.g. Nigeria), forming a complete gradient market coverage.
In terms of content dimension, BestReels shares the "Best" prefix with BestNovel, a web fiction platform under Changdu Technology, and focuses exclusively on the U.S. market. According to data from Diandian, in May this year, the revenue of BestReels in the U.S. market was about 18 times that of the second-ranked Japanese market. It is also the only product in Changdu Technology's matrix that emphasizes "no ad interruption" in its app description. MoboDrama is a pure AI short drama brand — the only one among the 5 products that completely abandons live-action short dramas.
In terms of brand dimension, the Mobo-prefixed series (MoboReels, MoboShort, MoboDrama) forms the main brand matrix; BestReels and MiniDrama adopt independent brand names. This two-track parallel of "main brand + independent brand" not only reduces the interference of independent products on the main brand's tonality, but also facilitates testing differentiated strategies and business models in different markets.
IV. Can the Slow Strategy Break Through?
The moment when MoboDrama launches its traffic investment can be regarded as a node marking the maturity of the AI short drama track.
On the one hand, leading manufacturers such as Maiya and Kunlun Wanwei have increased their investment in AI short dramas; on the other hand, multiple forces including game companies, tool developers, and domestic short drama companies are also pouring into the overseas AI short drama track. DataEye Research Institute previously counted that a number of companies including Guyan Network, Qinjiu Network, Yueyou Technology, and Miaokan Short Drama have launched overseas AI drama APPs. AI short drama has evolved from the previous "try it out" stage to a "must-do" business.
However, even for AI short drama APPs, their growth paths are vastly different. Take VibeShort as an example: it launched in February, quickly started traffic investment in March, exceeded 5 million downloads and over 4.5 million USD in revenue in May, ranking among the top 10 in the overall overseas rankings. It seized the window period with speed and strong investment intensity, and is a typical representative of the "fast attack" type. MoboDrama has chosen a completely different "slow strategy" — the interval between launch and promotion is about 4 months, and it enters the market after the market matures.
Changdu Technology's confidence lies in its huge overseas short drama matrix, which means MoboDrama does not have to bear the immediate growth pressure. Its years of overseas distribution experience from web fiction to short drama has provided sufficient accumulation for content reserve and polishing. No matter in the era of live-action short dramas or AI-generated dramas, "high-quality content" is always the scarcest resource.
But the challenges cannot be ignored. First of all, 5 overseas short drama APPs mean 5 sets of independent traffic investment budgets and operating costs. According to the *2026 China Short Drama Overseas Market Research Report* released by Diandian, user acquisition and traffic investment have accounted for about 50% of the total cost of overseas short dramas. Under the background of continuously rising user acquisition costs, the cash flow pressure of the matrix strategy cannot be underestimated. Secondly, take MoboReels as an example: it used to rank in the top tier of overseas short dramas for a long time in 2024, but since 2025, it has gradually dropped from the top tier to the middle tier — the growth of a single product does not always follow the expected trajectory. Especially in the fast-paced AI drama era, whether the "slow strategy" may lead to missing the key growth window needs to be verified by subsequent data.
Finally, there is the squeeze from cross-border competitors. AI technology has greatly lowered the threshold of short drama production, and various manufacturers including game companies and tool developers have poured into the overseas AI short drama market. The influx of a large amount of capital and participants may reshape the industry pattern, and even squeeze the living space of some mid-tier products. Whether Changdu Technology's product matrix can gain a firm foothold in this round of competition remains to be seen.
